George Mellor, Thomas Smith, and William Thorpe were luddites alongside their fellow Neds. George, Thomas and William killed a particularly heinous entrepreneur and they were executed on Friday 8th January 1813. Many others were hanged for the crime of breaking machines, essentially vandalism.
